THE IMPORTANCE OF WHOLE-HOUSE HUMIDIFICATION SYSTEMS.
Four words can summarize why whole-house humidifiers are important to homeowners- WELL-BEING, SAVINGS, NEED and DEMAND.
Consumer need for Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) solutions has grown dramatically in the past decade, as homes are built more tightly and people become more aware of health-related issues. While air cleaners and ventilation keep indoor air clean, proper humidification is needed to control, minimize and eliminate unhealthy airborne pollutants. The ASHRAE standard range for optimum indoor relative humidity is between 40-60% year round, and 35-55% during the heating season. Controlling indoor relative humidity is important because having too much or too little humidity in the home can pose risks to the well-being of individuals in the home, and potentially cause costly damages to the home itself. Today’s whole-house humidifiers and humidity controls work to maintain RH levels within these ranges.

Types of Humidification Systems:
BYPASS FLOW-THROUGH UNITS provide the most flexible installation options and can be installed on either the supply plenum or the return duct, based on what makes most sense in the particular application. A bypass duct then connects the unit to the duct opposite of the unit installation. Air is sucked from the supply, through the humidifier’s soaked clay media pad, and blown into the return for recirculation through the furnace and out into the living areas.
POWERED FLOW-THROUGH UNITS work best for homeowners with variable speed, multi-stage furnaces. These furnaces reduce airflow during extended run times when only the first stage of heating is operating. Powered flow-through units include an internal fan, do not require a bypass duct, and can be installed in small, narrow areas of the supply duct.
STEAM HUMIDIFICATION is another good option and provides a constant humidity level. Operating independently of the furnace, this type of humidifier has a heating element that boils water in the unit’s reservoir when the humidistat indicates the need for humidity, and is mounted under a supply or return air duct.
Maintaining the Right Humidity Level:
To maintain proper humidity, and help prevent condensation and mold, the humidistat must adjust or be adjusted as outside temperature changes. Whole-house humidifiers can be controlled in three different ways:
STANDARD MECHANICAL CONTROL- Standard controls require manual adjustments daily and put complete responsibility on the homeowner. While easy to operate, it is the least effective way to maintain proper humidity levels.
HUMIDITY CONTROL- The control is mounted separately from the thermostat and automatically adjusts to achieve the right humidity level. Most humidity control systems are connected to an outdoor sensor through a hole in the wall
INTEGRATED CONTROL WITH THERMOSTAT- This control is combined with the thermostat to provide consistent humidity levels. This option also provides one common location for thermostat and humidity level control for the entire home.
The logic behind whole-house humidifiers with integrated controls is simple: the cooler it gets outside, the more the furnace runs. Replacing the wiring from the outdoor sensor to the furnace sensor accomplishes the same result. These integrated systems calculate optimum humidity without the risk of condensation or the inconvenience of an outside sensor.
